The problem is not that it's impossible to work around the incorrect
default. The problem is the incorrect default itself.

I installed it from focal-proposed. `gist --login` works through the new
login method. After that, `gist-paste -pd 'Example file'

@dschepler is right. systemd-environment-d-generator gets run by

To add to the issue, `/etc/environment` has one line setting `PATH` and
throwing out any old versions of `PATH` (it doesn't contain `$PATH`).
Changing that changed my `PATH` consistently on reboot:
$ cat /etc/environment

My `/etc/profile` doesn't seem to set the PATH, so the systemd bug
resolution may not be applicable:
$ grep PATH /etc/profile

This issue is fixed in Ubuntu 17.10 and later (which use GNOME instead
of Unity). See https://askubuntu.com/a/1002071/616451 for how to enable

@SoundVM, this bug is only about QCA6174, not AR9485, as seen in the bug
report title ("QCA6174 stops working on newer kernels after second group
rekeying").
You may want to submit a new bug report if you want the issue looked
into.

It appears that the following is better than a reboot:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F3
2. Log in
3. Run `killall gnome-screenshot`
4. Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or Ctrl+Alt+F2 if that doesn't get you back to the GUI)
