Update: Effects work (great) if only one of the two monitors is online,
while the other one is disabled. If both of them are enabled, effects do
not work. I tend to blame the graphics card and the graphics card driver
for this, but, if I can help tracking down this issue, let me know.

Experiencing the same problem. Running Ubuntu 8.10 and problem only
appears with a usb stick after i have formatted it using gparted.
Though, all the other devices run nicely.
