I'll see what I can do..but it may take a few months, due to the
upcoming semester...I think your hunch is correct, I just need to
re-establish an environmet to reproduce the defect (in a virtual box).

A small clarification of the problem: The core issue is that installing
cifs-utils (and smbclient) and doing a cifs SMB3 (or SMB1) mount:
> sudo mount -t cifs //xx.yy.zz/abc t --verbose -o
vers=3,username=xx,sec=ntlmv2,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,domain=DD,nounix
yields a obfuscating "-2
