And I tried to reproduce the problem and it still happens,
unfortunately.

I observed this occasionally on Ubuntu 16.04 and very frequently on
Ubuntu 18.04 (Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS)
I can reproduce it with a regular use of Chromium, Firefox or
LibreOffice, by instance.

I also tried several of the solutions proposed here and in askubuntu, but only

Indeed, it is not necessary to delete the entire .config directory. Just move
the compiz subdirectory: '$ mv ~/.config/compiz-1 backup/'
