gksudo gedit /etc/default/acpi-support
and changing the line
STOP_SERVICES=""
to
STOP_SERVICES="networking"

before running mplayer also resolves this problem.
The output:

This bug also is the cause of the "slow startup" problem for mplayer it

Problem is gone! I don't know why it took longer for mine to be fixed -
maybe they were a little bit slower on the 64-bit kernel. It's been
fixed at least a week for me.

I looked around for a small H264 video I could give you, maybe a trailer or
anything. No luck.

Nothing I tried fixed this problem. I upgraded my NVIDIA binary drivers, tried
not using Flash 9, removed all gnome settings in my home directory, tried
reinstalling human-cursors-theme, reinstall nautilus. I'm completely out of
ideas.

Same problem here. In addition to this I have problems where my gnome locks-up
while dragging something. The mouse icon is then stuck like that and won't do
anything until I switch to a virtual console and kill nautilus.
On my own computer I have this in my kernel messages:
[ 0.00] Nvidia boa
Froze again and I switched to a console. Killing nautilus brought gnome
back to a usable state. Still not sure how to fix it.

Same exact problem. I've been trying to narrow it down. I removed Flash 9,
thinking it might be that but it still happens. Running Opera 9, Nvidia
proprietary drivers, gaim, and apache2. I've been trying to narrow down the
problem this week.
