I upgraded to the latest version of VMWare (6.5) and have not had this
problem for a week. Used to be several times a day.

Problem was found to be with the the GRUB defaults.

After builidng a custom kernel from source using make-kpkg, my menu.lst
entries were all changed to point to a non-existing partition.
I corrected them and booted, but none of the SATA drives are recognized.
