Running apt-get and a java program, the fans started spinning up, and
unity randomly rearranged my windows. There were a couple of appreport
windows where the characters were all replaced with boxes, but that went
away. No hard crash or reboot.

To clarify, I was selecting 'SSL' as the encryption method. I figured
out a workaround though:
In the 'server' field, append the port to the server name:

That works just fine; odd that there's no 'port' field in the settings.
