I have a similar experience that seems to have started after a recent,
the past week or so, Hardy update.
Running Firefox 3 Beta 5 and doing nothing more, causes Firefox, I
assume, to access my HD for a number of seconds during which time
Firefox will not respond. I've watched running processes, f

Public bug reported:
Clicking a link in an email (Thunderbird 2) does not open the browser
(Firefox 3 (Beta 4)). Worked in Gutsy (with Firefox 2). Same email read
in my windows machine verifies the link is good.

Ditto above (Robert & Henning.) Didn't have the problem in Gutsy on the
same machine, a slow PII. I kill the process via the System Monitor
which indicates, like most everything else listed, Update Manager is
sleeping. Second attempt to update works as it should.
