I had a similar problem, but the screen was not completely blank. I could see that the OS tried to tell me something but it was only pixels in size repeated 4 times. Removing "vga=769" from grub (pressing e) solved the problem. It turned out to be fstab telling me that it couldn't mount a volume

I can see that a fix has been comitted for Ubuntu, but in which version is it included? 2.24.1? I have the same problem in Jaunty using version 2.24.1. I used to have the ATI driver, but it made the complete system too slow. When I turned off the ATI driver the system is usable. With both driver
