There is no new Kernel in xenial-proposed to test.
Your proposed fix in Kernel 4.4.0-69 did work and solve the issue, but this fix
was removed with Kernel 4.4.0-70 and it is broken again since then.
Even though you had committed a fix, it is now, for unknown reasons,
removed and the

4.4.0-64-generic, the system freezes shortly after it boots into the

packages via Synaptic to prevent automatic updates until this issue is

I can confirm this. On my business PC runs 12.04 which allows me to close the
upgrade dialog and leaves me the option to reboot or shutdown whenever I prefer
to do so.
On my home PC, I'm running 12.10 which does not allow to close the dialog and
ignore the reboot prompt. Why bothering users

I can confirm this issue for Ubuntu 12.04 with nvidia driver version 295.40,
GeForce 8800 GTX and GeForce 8400 M:
Desktop is freezing and unusable.
Installing 295.33 from the x-org PPA solves the problem.

In natty the xserver was upgraded to 1.10 which has a lot of trouble with
nvidia cards. Ubuntu is not the only distribution that has these problem but
suffers most from it because of unity 3D.
In maverick (10.10) the xserver version was 1.9 which worked very well with
nvidia cards.

The "workaround" is blacklisting graphics cards for unity 3d. On these
cards ubuntu will fallback to classic mode without desktop effects ...

The proprietary 270 driver seems to break composition of 7300 and 7200
series. That's why the screen seems to be freezed but the mouse pointer
is still movable and programs are running. It is reported by users of
other distributions (Gentoo) and XServer version 1.9 as well:

Yes I can confirm this. I also was able to run Compiz/Unity with
nvidia-173.
So this seems to be nvidia driver related. I'll try to downgrade to
nvidias 260 drivers which were used in Maverick. Maybe this could solve
the issue.
But there are still really nasty bugs in compiz. Like emerald is not
This doesn't work either. I can only sign in using "Safe Model" without compiz.
I reported a bug about it. I did this on my computer at work so I spend all the
time getting this crap to work instead of performing my duty. I wish I hadn't
upgraded to natty ...
