Exact same bug 3 years later, zip files are extracted with wrong
permissions, 700 instead of 722. I've seen this constant behaviour on
every distribution since 10.04, on every machine (6 total).

Ok, just found it. The default layout for Ubuntu (France, Alternative)
translates a press on the spacebar to the non-breaking space. Setting
the layout to France restores a correct bahaviour. Thanks.

I have the same problem since I've upgraded to Maverick. (Linux 2.6.35-22)
The upgrades don't work anymore after the machine has been up for some time, so
I can upgrade when I've just powered my laptop on. If I run other applications,
do my stuff for a few hours, any upgrade with apt and dpkg
You can reproduce the error by doing this :
Use nautilus to display a remote directory (ex. SFTP)
Extract a tar.gz to any remote directory, it will extract the files properly,
but will complain about utime warnings.
