I've created usb-stich with ubuntu dvd 11.04 and it proposed to use
proprietary drivers for NVidia.
Installation of the driver was successful.
No more bug here, thanks

I confirm... have just the very same problem.
My solution is to kill the process. It leads to disabling of all appearance
settings to defaults.
Then I go System-Preferences-Keybord and this process runs again
same in here... i wish it would be corrected

Tried out the way it is described in #20 but still nothing.
I have HP 4515s and same problem, ether :(
But tried to experiment. Just in a moment of startup (when the desktop
is shown but not all of processes are loaded) I've pressed the
Fn+F8,F7,F11 and F12 to adjust the brightness
