Epson Artisan 810 works great as a printer and is automatically detected
by SANE, but when either a preview or full scan is started using either
the auto-document feeder or flatbed mode the scan head moves into
position to begin the scan, with the light on, and then locks up.

While adding arbitrary software repositories via apturl may be a
security risk, adding standard Ubuntu repositories such as karmic-
backports (and potentially karmic-proposed, etc) would not seem to be.
This could be done through apt:foo?channel=k
Please do not build libraries with non-default flags such as this. If
you're going to do this, build separate shared libs with the different
options.

This needs to be fixed in karmic. Just put out a +ubuntu version until
upstream puts out a release with the fix.

This seems like a pretty serious bug to get fixed before release, many
more people will be affected by it who won't know how to find or apply
the above patch, or even think that reducing their screen resolution
could fix it.
