Tim: I just tried the unrealeased linux-backport package you posted, it
works well for me. It made "Digital Input Source" appear in gnome-
volume-manager->Preferences. Then on the Options tab I could select
"Digital Mic 1" for the "Digital Input Source" list. Thanks!
