I did the upgrade today and also found that it worked the first time I
started it but crashed every time after that. I ran the following, which
fixed the problem.

rm .thunderbird/{profile

I had a look at the upstream source and I'm surprised that you found it
working on the machines you tested on. It appears that
soundconverter.batch.prepare_files_list() can't deal with the uri-
encoded filenames which are given in line 218 of b

occurred because I was using xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, which I
gather is no longer supported. Removing this solved the problem.

I can confirm that the problem disappears after removing xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics, but there's also now no 'momentum' when scrolling and
the mouse feels a bit odd in a way I can't quite describe. I'll mention
this upstream.
