The reason I downgraded gnome-panel as well as gnome-session was that
the shutdown options wouldn't work in the system menu. It could have
been due to something else though so I think I might install 2.24 again
and see what happens.

As a temporary workaround I've downgraded gnome-session to
2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2 and gnome-panel to 2.22.2-0ubuntu1.1. I don't know if
this has broken anything else but so far I haven't noticed any side
effects (apart from the new shutdown menu options missing) and session
saving is working as it was b
