Having successfully installed an 11.10 server with RAID, I tried again
on 11.10 desktop: this time, after getting the message that GRUB had not
installed, I chrooted into /target/, did 'sudo-apt-get install mdadm',
then 'sudo grub-instal
Nevermind, my bug seems to be in Ubiquity.

I was able to use ubuntu-11.10-server-amd64 to install a system with
mdadm RAID1 (GPT partitioning, 1MB "BIOS GRUB" partition, ~20GB RAID)

I've got Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-23-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP) booting using
my old grub 1.97 (that was booting Ubuntu 9.04) compiled as so:
./configure --with-platform=efi --target=x86_64
make
./grub-mkimage -d . -o grub.efi acpi boot chain configfile ext2 fat hfsplus
normal part_gpt sh
Then my grub.
I'm not entirely sure how the package update/upgrade process works in

individual partitions for swap. From what I understand the array was
created during installation and marked as swap, then had a single
partition removed from it (currently activated as swap).
