I'd like to add that in 8.04, the screen no longer automatically reverts
to its default resolution when you don't confirm the new resolution selection
within a short timeout period. This makes the problem harder to recover
from than it previously was.

[RS482] Changing screen resolution garble
I tried the 8.04 release CD (ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso) and the
problem is still there.

No, it has not been fixed. I just downloaded ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso
and booted it as a live CD, and it's still looping.
If anything, the problem has gotten worse: with alpha 4, the desktop background
and menu bars appeared briefl

Would be great if this was added soon.

You wouldn't have to ask that if you had actually read the ticket.

Isn't that expected when booting in "safe graphics mode"?

I still get the same error with the Hardy alpha 4 live CD and alsa-lib 1.0.15.
To reproduce, boot from the live CD and run the commands
sudo apt-get install dpkg-dev
sudo apt-get install libc6-dev
sudo apt-get install libasound2-dev
apt-get source alsa-lib
cd alsa-lib-1.0.15/test
cc pcm.c -lasound
The pops and clicks still occur with the Hardy alpha 4 live CD.
Here are the exact commands needed to reproduce the issue
after booting from the live CD:
sudo apt-get install dpkg-dev
sudo apt-get install libc6-dev
sudo apt-get install libasound2-dev
apt-get source alsa-lib
cd alsa-lib-1.0.15/test
The attached Xorg.0.log is from Hardy Heron alpha 4, and was saved after
making a failed attempt to change the resolution.

I have now. It said "no errors found".
Also, if I choose the "Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode" option,
the looping behavior does not occur; in that case I get a working
desktop (aside from the issue reported in bug #138087).

Though the system doesn't boot, running bash chrooted to it worked.
Using that method, I tried what you suggested in an earlier message:

I tried booting the Hardy Heron alpha 4 CD in safe graphics mode

Public bug reported:
I downloaded the Hardy Heron alpha 4 CD and tried booting it,
choosing the default "Start or install Ubuntu" option.
The CD boots fine up to the login screen, which says "User ubuntu will
login in 10 seconds" and does the 10-second countdown. Then the

I also ran into this problem, on 7.10 (desktop). I already had the mac address
set in the guest configuration file, but networking didn't work in the guest.
I finally got it to work by applying Todd Deshane's workaround of removing
network-manager and adding
