Also keep in mind that 16.04 ships with perl 5.22, where this warning is
fatal[1], rendering the package completely broken there.
If upgrading the package is undesirable due to Ubuntu's policies, I've
attached a patch with the fix as described by OP.

I think the "real" bug here, is that the postinst-script (usr/share
/kernel-package/pkg/image/postinst) from newer versions of kernel-
package stopped building initrds but the version of initramfs-tools in
lucid doesn't install the necessary files in
/etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/ to pick up the slac

The GDM greeter will crash (and be respawned indefinitely) whenever the
GECOS-field of an entry in /etc/passwd contains an '&'-sign (ampersand).

I highly suspect that I am seeing a similar bug with the same core
symptom.
We are not using nscd, but with the same content in /etc/nsswitch.conf
and a disappearing nis master, any lookup of local (e.g. root) users
hang. Killing the nis client or removing the nis-entry from
nsswitch.conf rectifie
