recently and I was not able to reproduce this bug under Karmic...it
might be related. Look at the /etc/init/avahi-daemon.conf file ;) I'm
not familiar with upstart so I can't see anything that might cause this

When I start the computer but do not login to a session...the computer is
visible from avahi client
When a user is connected...it is not visible anymore.

If you're on Karmic just install the ATI proprietary driver from their website.

With the default ext4 mount options, there is no bug :

have 3Gb recognized (instead of 4Gb) but most important, everything works like
a charm ! No more kernel panic. Network Manager works great under Gnome, but I
had to install wicd under KDE in order to connect...Thanks
That's weird, I have this bug with Karmic (64 bits) with ppa mainline
kernel 2.6.32rc5 but I can't see why it's related to a specific kernel
version...

I still have this problem on Karmic 2.6.31-14 64bits with a Toshiba L505
(L500 series) even with acpi_osi="Linux" AND with acpid disabled (which
is by default in karmic according to sysv-rc-conf...).

Actually...driver installation is OK. Network-Manager and Wicd works
also (connection to WPA hotspot). But after using internet, kernel panic
! Just tell me if you want more information ;)

I can confirm that latest packages from Karmic doesn't solve this
bug...still poor 2D performance (scrolling, moving window) for the
second user... And as GDM has been upgraded, you can't use anymore the
xorg-extra.conf workaround...
