My computer freezes randomly too, and after that I can't it start, if it

- mouse, CDRom, Floppy not working.
Windows 2000 was running just fine.

xubuntu 9.10 got all updates 2010-01-29.
Computer simple stuck after switch it on. Then I must switch it out and after
switch it on I can choose "Recovery mode".
Then I use "clean disk", "Resume" and go to command prompt.
To run Gnome
$cd /etc
$sudo gdm
Why Gnome can't run a
