I'm having the same issue with an RTX 2080. If I start up in safe
graphics mode, it works. But of course then I get degraded graphics.

1. it enforces having a menu bar, elementary apps are designed without

I can confirm this bug in maverik, empathy 2.32.0. I also get double
notifications on new incoming messages, the first notification happens
when the message is received, and the second when you open the message.
