This seems to be back in 12.04 LTS!
Same work around using mount --bind fixes it there too. Is this just a
regression because someone forgot the NFS issue, or a new problem?

Upgrading from 8.10 to 9.4, glibc update would not work using "update-manager
-d". Worked OK from the command line using apt-get dist-upgrade.
