I ran into that one as well when installing Ubuntu 12.04. I tried using
a BTRFS as file system for the root mountpoint (/). I solved my trouble
by using EXT4 again.
Seems like grub cannot handle BTRFS yet :-/

e laptop screen always refreshed properly
after resuming from suspend without the second monitor. I will try to
reproduce the problem again in the next time and if I manage, I will try
your suggestions and report back here. But maybe the problem was due to
something else.

Andy,
I rebooted without a second monitor and redid my tests (quickly). No
problem found. I attached the second monitor on the fly. Detection
worked fine, no issues to report.
What I like most is that I'm now able to suspend/resume the laptop.

etc. but to no avail :) Uptime now is 44 minutes and everything seems
to be just fine.
Also suspend/resume worked without issues. I did not test hibernate (to
disk).
I will check booting without a second monitor now, just to make sure,
and report back here.
