I forgot to mention that I do not have any RAM shortage (2 GB), so
paging should not be the problem (top shows that there is enough free
memory but update-apt-xapian-index uses about 11% of it).

This issue is far from solved. My machine is blocked for about 5 minutes
regularly:

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit
/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Manager
org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.Stop
works. Another thing which works for me is the much shorter
halt -p

The bug is still alive and kicking in TB 3.1.9 and a pain in the a**,
because I have several password-protected feeds. I am also voting for
getting it fixed. If I find out how, I will add a screenshot or two.
