Window selector applet's help says: "The Window Selector lists the windows in
all workspaces. The windows in all workspaces other than the current workspace
are listed under a separator line."
It really does that in metacity: windows on the current workspace are
separated f
That's what it always did—closing all windows with no tray icon caused
pidgin to quit. Now it doesn't.

Same situation in GNOME if indicator-applet is not running. This is a
problem with pidgin's settings—can we somehow get old settings back?
Currently I'm forced to run indicator-applet, so instead of having no
unnecessary icons in the panel I have a huge applet.

That bug report is actually the exact opposite of mine; people there
want to have the notification icon, but don't want to see the main
window. I want the notification icon to only be visible when tasque
wants to actually notify me about something.

I haven't found an option to hide the notification area icon. According
to the GNOME HIG, there should be one — tasque does not notify me about
anything most of the time, so the icon is useless and it only clutters
my notification area.

Yes; here it is. The «Screenshot example» icon on the desktop changed to
a grey one, but icnos in «Places» and directly on the panel (the
unnamed folder) have not.
