I ran into this again today a few times, and it pissed me off enough to

Well, as I said I've never done this before so here goes nothing.
I've tried to attach a patch that applies to MenuEditor.py. I started
from alacarte-0.11.9 obtained from apt-get source alacarte.
The patch contains a function checkDuplicate(item) that checks whether
the current item already exis

Apparently the problem is alacarte. I can get the new profile to have
the leftover file if I touch the menu item in alacarte (i.e. unheck and
check it). I'll file a bug for that, I guess.
In any case, it would still make sense for the package to remove the
file in ~/.local/share/applications.
A new user profile does not show the same issue.
My user profile has ~/.local/share/applications and the new one does
not. This directory has the extraneous desktop file.
I have KDE4 installed alongside GNOME, if that makes a difference.

This happened to me to. NetworkManager died during the Interpid ->
Jaunty upgrade. Flashplugin-nonfree is part of the upgrade. It needs
to connect to adobe.com to download Flash, but cannot do so since NM is
down. A reinstall will correctly download from Adobe.

Well, now it doesn't show any icon at all, which is better than the
wrong one. Best case would still be to show the correct icon for the
command after gksu, perhaps with a smaller gksu icon (the badge one) in
the corner.

Confirming. I'm running up-to-date Intrepid + backports on a Dell Latitude
D620. Sound Preferences indicated my sound card is "HDA Intel STAC92xx", and
I'm using ALSA.

... Perhaps I was unclear. It appears the modified files were a red
herring, since after a complete reinstall F-spot still crashes.
Steps to reproduce for me:
(1) Open F-Spot
(2) Open Preferences window.
(3) Crash

I deleted my entire catalog, then uninstalled (apt-get remove --purge)
and reinstalled. It still crashes 100%
