This bug seems to have moved into acpi in Jaunty. I have a Sony Vaio
VGN-CR520E, and the above fix corrected the hal problem in Intrepid.
However, now even acpi is always reporting that the AC adapter is
plugged in.

It does not seem to be fixed in the 1.0.11.0-1 package. This is a
serious problem, because it prevents SBCL from being used with SLIME,
the most popular LISP development environment. I'm surprised it hasn't
been fixed since I provided a solution almost two years ago.

I got this working in Feisty for my laptop. There is a problem with the
driver for my irda chip (bug 133169).
Check your syslog to see if an SMSC irda chip is detected when you boot.
If it is, putting these two lines at the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/irda-
utils might solve the problem:
