Not sure we should really call this a bug. This behaviour results from
initramfs-tools.conf containing the line 'MODULES=most' which includes
all sorts of unnecessary things by default, maybe good for a livecd but
perhaps not for an installation. A better behaviour would be
'MODULES=dep' which only
Also, should update-initramfs be checking the blacklist before including
modules? That sort of seems like something desirable.

This problem also occurs on my recently updated intrepid ibex system, so

OK, I think I've got it fixed. apt-get is at least downloading and
apparently reinstalling kubuntu-desktop anyway! In summary the two
packages I needed from backports to fix this were:
kdebase-workspace-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu7~intrepid1_all.deb
kdelibs5-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid2_all.deb

Aha. I tried installing the kde-window-manager explicitly, which then
reported a similar 'Depends:...' error, and the same for that dependency
until discovering the apparent bottom line:

4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 is to be ins
With the backports repositories enabled there are apparently more unmet

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
