For me the problem was solved with ubuntu 9.04. Now I can start the Live
CD without problem either in Normal or Safe graphics mode with my ATI
3850. No problem now.

Well, finally I managed to run the Live CD. The solution is quite
obvious, but I didn't know about that (I'm a newbie in ubuntu/linux).
On the first screen of the live CD, just after you choose the language
you want, then you press F4 and select Safe Graphics Mode. I did this

I'm agree wirth you, I think it's not the same bug, but ir also affects
ubuntu gnome, not only KDE.

I have the same problem with ubuntu 8.10 release candidate. With another
previus beta happened the same. I start the live cd and it starts
normally, even I can hear the sound when the desktop is loaded in the
speakers, but the screen is blank. My graphics card is ATI 3850, and the
rest of the compo
