Situation for me:
First run, as the first image, unresponding buttons on a strange
metacity border, no unity.
I managed to open cssm and switch unity and similar stuff on, so now the
system is QUITE ok.
Remaining problems:

More over you can't set the keyboard preferences anymore (for example
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to kill the server X).
A workaraund for the terminal is to set it as a compiz extra shortcut.

The bug is not related to totem only.
In general when you drag whatever onto unity dash, the error you are
reporting appens.
For example if you try to add a custom launcher the whole compiz + unity
crashes and at the restore point no launcher is added.
