Same issue on tablet Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus with Android 3 and smartphone
Galaxy S II with Android 4.
Seems to be caused by Microsoft DRM added to Andoid by Samsung, which
can be verified by:
1) connecting the device
2) running mtp-detect, which hangs at "Attempting to connect device(s)"
3) disconne
The problem still exists on 12.04 (Precise Pangolin).
I've tried running "ubuntu-bug linux", but it complained that I'm using
mainline kernel instead of official Ubuntu one, which is untrue - I've
recently upgraded to the 12.04 release and didn't mess with custom

Yup, you were right.
Windows 7 comes preinstalled on this laptop and it shows "Alps Pointing-
device for VAIO" in device manager.
I've found bug 530298, bug 377741 and bug 359982 which seem more
appropriate for Alps touchapds. Thanks for the hint.

The effect is that I cannot configure it and in KDE, the touchpad

OK, on Kubuntu Maverick live CD there's no problem too.
So, it seems that this is specific to the Lucid kernel.
