I can confirm that the stock kernel on Ubuntu 8.10 32bit DOES NOT CONTAIN this
problem anymore!
Brightness controls are fully functional, also 'dim when idle' seems to work
outstanding.
Seems like that also A LOT of other things seem to be fixed in Ibex
