I too am experiencing this issue, my machine stops booting at Checking battery state regardless of whether I have lightdm or gdm configured as desktop manager & the only way I can get to Unity or Gnome-Shell to start is to boot into recovery mode & do either "sudo lightdm start" or "sudo gdm start
