Figured what was wrong:
I had an external display attached. Desktop extended to that display with
amdcccle and XFCE / settings / Display
The video got cropped when the external display was NOT attached. Watched the
movie on the internal LCD.
The way I switched between the modes with/without exte

fglrx does not work with x1400 after the latest update and restart.
Update was on 2010 feb 13, the driver was switched back to "ati"
The workaround described in #284687 does not work, the result is as Xorg.2.log
