Btw, I had ended up installing ubuntu studio 20.10 before trying the
solution so I am not sure if it would solve it under 20.04.

Setting kernel parameter kernel parameter "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1"
solved the problem, as suggested in comment #4 above and here

I also tried find /var/lib/dkms/fglrx-updates -name make.log and nothing
happened, however, I do know that it has never happened before using the
"proposed updates" setting under package sources. I could be wrong but
it seems to be with the proposed update.
