I think I figured it out?
22.04 has broken my DNS settings. It claims to be using systemd-resolve,
If I add "nameserver 10.1.1.1" to /etc/resolv.conf, then smbget works
properly. Which makes this a name resolution problem, and the "extra
space" is clearly just a red herring.
While I don't have systemd-resolve, I do have resolvectl, and it says it
is using 10.1.1.1 but obviously it is not?

the problem probably stems from the Nouveau project targetting Nvidia
GPUs. A more helpful kernel message would have been useful. Not sure why
