Thanks. I eventually removed enough packages from the system to allow the
upgrade to work. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the details
anymore and I think I threw out my notes.
Since then, apt upgrades, including kernel upgrades, have been working
fine.

I've had this issue for as long as I've had Ubuntu 20.04, which is about
a year now. Having to re-size all terminal windows after suspend is
distracting and takes time. Does anyone have a solution?

there. What I really need to do is clone my system from a 1 Tb drive
onto the new 4 Tb drive using dd.

20.04.2. I also want to note that the error I reported was on a
