Now I'm using a proxy for faster downloads, but snapd is still writing
too much to disk (~9MB/s disk writes while ~1.5MB/s downloads).

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the
nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8
kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4
kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU
GeForce 840

I had the same problem in Ubuntu 20.10 and was able to get boinc working
again by doing the following:
1. Stop boinc service and kill any boinc processes
2. Remove the gui_rpc_auth.cfg from /etc/boinc (It would probably be safer to
change its name to gui_rpc_auth.cfg.old or something.)
3. Rebo
If you have ever had the KXStudio repos installed and used Cadence, this
can happen, even if Cadence is removed. We cannot support any system
that has ever had Cadence installed or used the KXStudio repos. This bug

Ahm, yes, there's another problem, but completely different one.
The upgrade procedure vom 18.04 to 20.04 converts LXD images from the
old debian based LXD to the snap based LXD and thus from /var/lib/lxd to
/var/snap/lxd/common/lxd and thus out of the encrypted directory.

On Azure, if the VM is Stopped(deallocated) and later Started, the VF NIC's
VMBus Instance GUID may change, and as a result hibernation/resume

FWIW I hadn't tried Google Chrome on this computer, so I installed it
(same stable version as the snap), and it loads with normal speed on
cold boot and subsequently.
