The issue is on my workstation which might have all kind of config history.
On a fresh focal system it looks like "default off, start works"

All error messages and progress messages (e.g. connecting to ...)

you'll never see the IP. In non-interactive mode, I don't think

This morning I found my computer on the login screen.
But not the one of the screen log, no a new one - so something must have
crashed.
Logging in again confirmed that all apps were gone and the gnome shell
was brought down what seems like triggered by a background update o
It looks like a bug in an old driver, possibly relating only to old
video cards. So a fix is unlikely to arrive in that particular driver
version.
You might want to try uninstalling the Nvidia driver version 390 and
then either:
* Do nothing -- the built-in open source driver should work; or
Recent updates and installing the latest driver (440) from "Software and
updates" seems to work fine when selecting "discrete graphics" mode from
the BIOS .

I tried again to collect the xorg logs.
To force new log files i did "rm .local/share/xorg/*" before booting with
nvidia.
after reboot i did not find any files in ".local/share/xorg" !!
nevertheless i found xorg logs in "/var/log"
so i will attach these files now.

1) i start with nouveau (so i have ui)
2) sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
3) sudo reboot now
4) login -> black screen
5) open terminal, copy requested files
6) sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

I can confirm going from 4.15.0-88 to 4.15.0-91 on my bcache system
