I ran into this bug too on Ubuntu MATE 20.04. After a reboot I was not
able to log back in at all.
I had to boot the PC through Live-USB, chroot into the system, and
applied Joseph C. Sible's workaround, wh
I installed from the .deb files and this did not make a difference for the
backlight, however the volume keys on the keyboard no longer work.
I am not experienced in testing different kernels so it is possible that I
messed up the install. I did not apply the .patch files.

Brilliant you still pursue this after all this time. My laptop sadly died just
last week, but at 14 years of age and a life that included 2-3 years rough

There are a few s2idle fixes and workaround in mainline kernel, and it
may worth a try. If it can fix your problem, fixes can be backported to
bionic

I am running the regular edition of Ubuntu. I have my system set to the
nl_NL locale. The clock display on the top bar of gnome-shell is
displayed as "vr mrt 6 23:45:01". While the individual parts are
translated correctly, the order is not. It should be "vr 6 mrt
23:45:01".
