On 2019-04-03 I updated to the latest linux-image-generic-
hwe-18.04:amd64 and then I got on a trip where things worked fine at
first. Back home I realized that the new version 4.18.0-17-generic has
issues initializing gnome with multiple monitors.

default 800x600 resolution while Disco Kubuntu is booted from a virtual-
machine (Virtualbox) is met with the resolution switching quickly to
what's expected followed by it immediately switching back to 800x

Playing .mp3s shows minutes:seconds, so please also do so when playing
mp4s, don't just show seconds. ffplay does this fine. Nobody can relate
to 6543 seconds, so also say it in HH:MM:SS format. Thanks!

Resumed 3 times from sleep with the 4.20 kernel, so far sound is working
fine.
Sometimes the issues does not appear until the next day (warm vs cold
hw?), so I will report back tomorrow.

Mplayer provides
.Step forward. Pressing once will pause movie, every
consecutive press will play one frame and then go
into pause mode again (any other key unpauses).
You forgot the step backwards key!!
One can step
This sounds like bug 1166529, but I am hesitant to mark any bug a
duplicate of that because if it's a port routing issue then that's
unique to the motherboard model and not unique to the sound chip.

Thanks for the bug report. The intermediate sound layer (PulseAudio)
hasn't changed between 18.10 and 19.04 so this is either going to be a
kernel problem or a GUI problem (gnome-control-center).
