Same issue here on a new 16.04 install on a new HP laptop. SSD. It was
crashing randomly during the install, then when I got it installed it
crashed every time I tried to run the updater.
Setting the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_background_ratio to 10 and 5
worked for me as well so far.

Adding journalctl logs for gnome-shell crash. After segfault line,
gnome-shell crashes and I'm returned to gdm login screen. Once I login,
everything works again until next crash, usually caused by OpenGL window
resizing or xrandr resolution changes.

That's what you get when Ubuntu syncs packages from Debian experimental
that are not ready for wider use yet.
The mapnik::freetype_engine issue should be fixed with Mapnik 3.0.17 and
the python-mapnik package that was rebuilt with it. It should be synced
into Ubuntu for inclusion in the next LTS.
Chrome file chooser doesn't show network locations too.

This bug was also in (K)Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.04 (don't know about 16.10).
In Linux Mint (even the latest one, 18.2) the bug is NOT found.
I'm using Xorg drivers, not Wayland, although a wayland-ish Mesa library
is installed.
This bug _really_ should be fixed. It can't be that tough? What is MINT
trying to force modprobe, I get
