package manager is trying to upgrade a config file which has been
"created by you or by a script". I had this happen when I first
installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 from scratch, I selected automatic login

I'm having a similar issue. I found that switching to a virtual terminal
and back again fixes the missing text in my case (Ctrl+Alt+F1 then
Ctrl+Alt+F7).

It's a problem when using gnome-shell/mutter or related software and
shell it is set to not display the application menu. Unfortunately we
