So I had proposed a fix for this that involved keeping the background
image in memory even when unlocked. That way it would be immediately
available when locking.
But it was determined that the memory usage was not worth the speed.

Perhaps it is a known bug? When I run my t440p ubuntu/mate 14.04 and switch to
the intel (power saving mode), then
there is "instant death" when I close the lid. As far as log files go, there is
no output to any of them.
NB: In the Nvidia (performance mode) sleep and wakeup
ok, just retested image #125 where this problem appeared, and only
downgraded 2 packagesbased on the commit logs

solution by recommending a compatible Nividia driver. My system hangs
at times. This is a real pain.

Possibly related to bug 1283938 . I have disabled lock screen on suspend
to try and get around the bug but it obviously hasn't worked.
I see a completely black screen with a working mouse cursor. Used Ctrl-

I believe this problem may have resolved itself, just recently, with
