This is really odd.
Digging into this, it appears that something in the system other than QtBearer

Right, this works to me too, however it brings the sound back for
unpredictable timewindow. With the overall increased laptop load it
stops working very quickly. I made a bash script that sets the power
state to zero every 0.1sec which works, however the result in weird
crackling sound every 0.1sec

How did you install conky? If you modified /etc/conky/conky.conf (which
is treated as a conffile), you may end up being prompted whether or not
you'd like to save the chnages you made on upgrade, and some APT
frontends may not handle conffile prompts properly. Please run "sudo

I did another test on this problem.
On my UbuntuStudio partition of this machine, in Synaptic Package
Manager, I locked the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel at version
2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1. Then I applied system updates.
On re-booting after applying updates, the system booted normally.

I can confirm the problem in Ubuntu 14.04.1 server: I configured a
bridge for openvpn:
iface br0 inet static
address 192.168.1.6
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
bridge_ports eth0 tap0
dns-nameservers 192.168.1.1
dns-search mydomain.com
The linked Debian bug report is filed against gnome-settings-daemon. So,
why is gnome-settings-daemon running in your case? It's usually not part
of the Xubuntu or Xfce session.
