This is ALREADY fixed in the 12.04 version, so for from there being "nothing
the Ubuntu developers can do", there is - backport the later version of dpkg
that supports the .xz file type!

Public bug reported:
Changelog since 0.44.09.9:
* Closes: (Debian) #749822 #750066 #750068
* Compiler fixes and optimizations
* Better C99 compatibility (stdbool, complex numbers)
* Fixed C integer promotion issues
* Fixed and improved all samples (resources included)
* Improved 3DS model support
I have the same problem in Asus A450LC with ubuntu 14.04.1 fresh installed.
I am sure it's not hardware issue. Touchpad works fine under windows.

Public bug reported:
Canonical have been hitting issues with the System V semaphore code.
Sometimes userspace processes would hang, sometimes an oops would pop.
We have been able to reproduce this. Michael Ellerman has taken a close
look and two fixes have just been merged in the 3.17 merge windo
