I believe the bug was fixed with a recent update.
After doing the latest updates and rebooting, I can see the "r" now in the dash.
I noticed this about a week ago, and I have rebooted many times after updates

I cannot follow your steps from 2 to 3, since 3D controller will

seeking. This is a regression from 13.10. With --verbose=2, I see
