Actually I can no longer reproduce this issue. When I started
experiencing this I started using another soundcard instead of the
motherboard one. I upgraded the box to Quantal and I've been trying to
reproduce this since then and I've been unable to, hence this must have
been fixed at some poi

- Go to the Thunderbird profile folder (for example,
"~/.thunderbird/e7k4hcr2.default/"). If the folder "chrome" doesn't
exist, create it (so "~/thunderbird/e7k4hcr2.default/chrome/").
- In the folder "chrome", if there's no file "userChrome.css", create
it.

I was a little confused about exactly which version of the kernel you
wanted to test, but it's a moot point because all of the ones I tried
had the bug still.
I'm still using Ubuntu 12.04 so sudo apt-get dist-upgrade just keeps me
on v3.5.0-40, which definitely has the bug. I also tested v3.11-rc1
I have been experiencing this issue too, but it seems to affect me more
severely:
While the panel is pegging one of my 8 (4 with hyperthreading) cores, if
I try to use the HUD or system tray applets, I have about 10 seconds
within which to launch a terminal and kill the process before my
computer
