My XPS 13.3FHD brightness has been off since kernel 3.8.0-30. Lucky for

Intel8x0 does not support mono playback, the mono pin is a downmix of
the stereo to mono speaker
if your note book did not use the mono pin , you need to remove the mono
playback volume from the driver or you remove the mono path in
pulseaudio conf
